Winchester is the county town of Hampshire, situated around 60 miles south-west of London. It was recently voted the "best place to live in the UK", for its quality of life. It's a "city", not a "town" because it is of historical importance (it was once, in the times of King Alfred, the capital of England) but its population is only around 50.000. So it's small enough to walk around but big enough to have lots of facilities.
